The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC) prepares a diverse group of young people to serve as a critical advisory resource to City Hall while developing their own leadership skills. Nevia Gallimore, a Junior at The Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice was selected this year to be on the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council. Nevia has already worked on a variety of projects through the program from young men’s initiatives to interviewing the Chancellor of New York City schools. Nevia likes the program because she is not treated like a student or teenager, but has a “real voice and can take action on the issues.” Among the issues she’s using her debate skills with is challenging the Student Discipline Handbook. Nevia argues that while there is a substantial emphasis on punishment and most students are familiar with the punishment section – that the section on student rights is not emphasized and most students are unaware of their rights. In addition to representing the voices of NYC youth, she is attending College Now classes at CUNY Hostos, coaches her school’s debate team, plays on her school’s Volleyball team and also is in Student Government.
