In Tech Academy Hosts Debate Tournament!

On Saturday, December 12, 2015, IN-Tech Academy hosted the last middle school debate tournament of 2015. Nearly 175 debaters from across New York City made the trip to compete in three rounds of public forum debate  around the issue of standardized testing in K-12 education in the United States. As students filed in, IN-Tech Dean of Discipline and Debate Coach, Wendy Spector and principal, Stephen Seltzer greeted the buzzing group of ten, eleven and twelve- year-old debaters. As students debate both sides of the issue throughout the day, a number of local community judges listened intently and voted for the teams who presented the most nuanced arguments. Following round three, the New York City Urban Debate League was presented a check a check from the Macquarie Foundation, after an amazing fundraising effort by Macquarie Group staff. After the excitement of the check presentation, the award ceremony began and Bronx students won BIG with IN-Tech, MS 15, Success Academy HS and Cornerstone Academy for Social Action taking home top prizes. Congrats to all who participated on Saturday. A special thank you to the custodial and security staff as well as the administration at IN-Tech for all of their assistance! We can't wait to see you all in 2016!

IN-Tech Academy Debate Team Featured in the Riverdale Press

Only in its second year, the IN-Tech Academy debate program has grown exponentially. Beginning with only seven students last year the team grew to 12 students in June and boasted an impressive 40 students  at the start of this academic year. IN-Tech Academy's debate team grew out of the Middle School Quality Initiative, a Department of Education (DOE) program designed to get students reading at grade level before they enter high school. Implemented in more than 100 schools, it incorporates tutoring, professional development and weekly themed literacy lessons in each class. Debate is an excellent addition to any school as it can improve students' communications, public speaking and research skills. We congratulate Coach Wendy Spector on the tremendous growth the team has seen under her leadership! For more information on IN-Tech Academy, the Middle School Quality Initiative and the positive impact debate can have on student readiness and performance, read the full article here
